Media Advisory: Employment Statistics
Market Wire, December, 2009
Shortly after Statistics Canada releases its monthly Labour Force Survey on Friday, December 4, Ken Georgetti, president of the Canadian Labour Congress, and senior economist Sylvain Schetagne will be available for comment to the media.
Statistics Canada reported in October 2009 that there were 1.59 million unemployed Canadian men and women, or 8.6% of the workforce. Since last fall 400,000 jobs have been lost. Some people are talking about a hoped for recovery, but there will be no real recovery until people are back at work. The CLC has called on the federal government to reform Employment Insurance and to use its upcoming budget to continue stimulus measures to support job creation, as the G20 nations have promised to do.
